Artist for Billy Graham

Fascinating Art Assignments From the Great Evangelist

n 1961 I went to work for The Reverend Billy Graham at his headquarters in Minneapolis. At that time, his ministry was rapidly expanding all over the world. There was no end of fascinating assignments. The Graham film studio in California regularly produced feature films to be shown in churches. My jobs included painting "storyboards" for films in the planning stages, and poster illustrations for the films that were being released, For the monthly magazine Decision, I painted Biblical illustrations. It was exciting to a young artist to be involved in such a past-paced and far-flung enterprise. I was 26 when I joined the Graham organization. I stayed for nine years.

Chapel Painting, "Christ In the Garden"

The painting visible in the background of this photo was painted to decorate a small prayer chapel in the Graham headquarters building. A very effective sound-and-light program was worked out involving this painting, as an attraction for the many visitors who came through.

Crucifixion Scene from "Man in the Fifth Dimension"

This film was shown at the New York World's Fair in 1964 and 65. To prepare for this painting, we had an actual cross constructed. Then a model posed on the cross on a huge freight elevator, which was lowered to the right height for our reference photos. My models were all blonde Scandinavians from Minneapolis.
