was
unsure of myself in this period. I was in my early twenties, and
undecided about the direction I should take. My home background
(my father was a Presbyterian minister) and my natural inclinations
suggested that I should focus on art with religious themes. I had
not yet begun to work in oils my paintings in this period
were done in designer's colors a form of gouache, or opaque
watercolor.
I was fortunate in that a number of religious publishers were headquartered
in Minneapolis, where I lived. The Augsburg Publishing House published
Christmas: An American Annual of Literature and Art — a publication
that I had seen on the coffee table in my home as I was growing
up. The editor of Christmas was Dr. Randolph Haugen, a dynamic,
creative man who befriended me and encouraged me in my work. I did
many paintings for Dr. Haugan over a ten—year period.
When I look now at my work from this period, it seems very immature
and, in many ways, superficial. But I was painting every day and
trying to find myself.
