John F. Kennedy
Aaron Shikler.
The White House,
Washington, DC.
|
Aaron Shikler's famous painting of John
F. Kennedy is based on a candid photograph taken by White
House photographer Jacques Lowe, as the President listened,
head bowed, in a circle of advisors. Catesby Leigh's charge
that many of the current presidential portraits resemble
"touched up photographs" might, in other circumstances,
be valid here. The charge does not, however, apply in
this case, given the extraordinary talents of the famous
artist at work. Aaron Shikler is a painter of formidable
power. The sensitivity of his touch, and the painterly
interpretation gives this iconic image a strength that
far transcends its original source.
