The Ten Greatest Portraits Ever Painted

Ten immortal masterpieces that tower over all the rest.

3. Frans Hals, 1580-1666
The Laughing Cavalier

The seminal painting style known for centuries as alla prima or premier coup virtually originated with Frans Hals, and he carried it to heights unexceeded in the four hundred years since. In a small reproduction, this painting can look almost photographic in its realism. However, contact with the dazzling original reveals a bravura touch that has never been equalled. The observer, studying such details as the lace collar and cuffs, is impressed with the unerring precision of the artist's observation, recorded for us with deft, fluid strokes of "direct" painting.
We are so familiar with this painting and its famous title that we fail to question the title's accuracy. Obviously the handsome gentleman is not laughing at all, but rather regarding us rather calmly with a knowing smirk.
